Warm-Up Activity
Select a warm-up activity to help get your class focused and on task.
- Journal Question: What makes you unique and different from other people?
- Option: Write or project the question and have students respond in their journal or on their “bell ringer” sheet as they enter class.
- Option: Have students discuss the question with a partner or in a small group.
- Vocabulary Review: Have students work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to complete the Lesson 7.2 Vocabulary Review Worksheet.
- Quiz: Have students complete the Lesson 7.2 Quiz to assess their prior knowledge.

Lesson Content
Review the content from the textbook lesson.
- Option: Use the Lesson 7.2 PowerPoint slides to review the chapter content.
- Option: Have students use the Lesson 7.2 Note-Taking Guide to review chapter content. Ask students to work individually, in pairs, or in small groups. Review the questions as a class if time permits.
Lesson Focus: Self-Esteem and Decision Making
- Pair students or place them into small groups. Give each group or individual a copy of the Lesson 7.2 Skill-Building Challenge Worksheet: Self-Esteem and Decision Making.
- Have students work individually to complete the worksheet.
- Have students complete the worksheet. They will write two story endings: one as if Andy has low self-esteem and one as if Andy has high self-esteem. Encourage students to use the decision making skill cues on the worksheet to help them model good decision making.
- As time allows, ask students to read their stories to another pair, group, or the class.
Challenge Activity
Have students needing an additional challenge work on the following Thinking Critically task.
Many positive and negative health behaviors are associated with high and low self-esteem. Choose a health behavior (such as eating healthy, exercising, managing stress, or not vaping or drinking alcohol) and research how self-esteem might influence it. Make a bullet point list of what you learn.
Reflection and Summary
Review the critical content from today’s lesson. Review the learning targets and ask students to answer each question posed.
Can you...
- Compare and contrast self-image and self-esteem?
Self-image is what you think about yourself, and self-esteem is how much you like, admire, and value yourself regardless of other people’s opinions.
- Explain how self-esteem can influence health?
People with strong self-esteem are better able to resist pressures from others. This allows them to make decisions that are best for them and that align with who they are and what they value.
- Demonstrate how self-esteem can influence decision making?
This was done in the Skill-Building Challenge. Ask students whether they were able to demonstrate this successfully through their stories.
Assessment
Complete one or more of the following assessment tasks for this lesson.
- Quiz: Have students take the Lesson 7.2 quiz.
- Reviewing Vocabulary: Collect the Lesson 7.2 Vocabulary Review Worksheet and evaluate it for accuracy.
- Note-Taking Guide: Collect the completed Lesson 7.2 Note-Taking Guide and spot-check one or more items for completion and accuracy.
- Skill-Building Challenge Worksheet: Have students submit the Lesson 7.2 Skill-Building Challenge Worksheet: Self-Esteem and Decision Making and use the Holistic Rubric: Healthy Decision Making to evaluate their skill development.
- Journal Question: Ask students to respond to the Journal Question again, adding information they learned from today’s class. Require a one-paragraph response that uses proper grammar.
Take It Home
Write down as many traits and characteristics as you can about what makes you who you are. Once you are done, identify which characteristics you share in common with your immediate family members and which are unique to you alone.
