Preparation

For the Warm-Up Activity: Write the Journal Question on the board or identify (and copy as needed) the worksheets you plan to use:

For the Content Focus: Open the Lesson 12.3 PowerPoint slides or make copies of the Lesson 12.3 Note-Taking Guide.

For the Lesson Focus: Copy the Lesson 12.3 Skill-Building Challenge Worksheet: Demonstrating Interpersonal Refusal Skills.

Warm-Up Activity

Select a warm-up activity to help get your class focused and on task.

  • Journal Question: Why do you think it is so hard for teens to quit using tobacco products once they start?
    • Option: Write or project the question and have students respond in their journal or on their “bell ringer” sheet as they enter class.
    • Option: Have students discuss the question with a partner or in a small group.

Lesson Content

Review the content from the textbook lesson.

Lesson Focus: Demonstrating Interpersonal Refusal Skills

  1. Provide each student with a copy of the Lesson 12.3 Skill-Building Challenge Worksheet: Demonstrating Interpersonal Refusal Skills.
  2. Students read the scenario and write a script that includes health reasons as to why they would not want to vape. The script should use the five steps of refusal skills.
  3. Have students find a partner to practice each other’s script.

Challenge Activity

Have students needing an additional challenge work on the following Thinking Critically task.

Quitting tobacco products, particularly smoking, improves your mental health, not just your physical health. Research the mental health benefits of quitting smoking. Write a paragraph explaining why these benefits are just as important as the physical benefits.

Reflection and Summary

Review the critical content from today’s lesson. Review the learning targets and ask students to answer each question posed.

Can you...

  • Express three ways to stay tobacco-free?

Staying tobacco-free includes avoiding situations where tobacco products may be used, having a well-practiced reason for saying no when someone pressures you, and hanging out with friends who don’t use tobacco products.

  • Recognize four signs of nicotine addiction?

Signs of nicotine addiction may include being irritable or anxious, having trouble sleeping or concentrating, and requiring more tobacco to get the same feeling a person did when they began using.

  • Analyze three benefits to being tobacco-free and quitting tobacco products?

Benefits of being tobacco-free are having more money, healthier-looking skin and nails, cleaner teeth and fresher breath, and more energy.

  • Assess different methods for quitting tobacco products and their effectiveness.

Methods for quitting tobacco products include starting with a plan to quit, using specifically designed phone apps for motivational reminders, seeking nicotine replacement therapy, and getting counseling. Having different options helps teens find the method that will be best for them.

Assessment

Complete one or more of the following assessment tasks for this lesson.

Take It Home

If you have a friend or family member who smokes or chews or vapes, suggest to them one of the quitting apps or text messaging programs from this lesson. Have them use it for a few days or hopefully longer and have them review it for you. What were the pros and cons of the app or text messaging service? Write that information down and share it with the class.
