Preparation

For the Warm-Up Activity: Write the Journal Question on the board or identify (and copy as needed) the worksheets you plan to use:

For the Content Focus: Open the Lesson 14.4 PowerPoint slides or make copies of the Lesson 14.4 Note-Taking Guide.

For the Lesson Focus: Copy the Lesson 14.4 Skill-Building Challenge Worksheet: Healthy Communication.

Warm-Up Activity

Select a warm-up activity to help get your class focused and on task.

  • Journal Question: What steps would you take if your guardian said they weren’t feeling well and suddenly collapsed onto the floor?
    • Option: Write or project the question and have students respond in their journal or on their “bell ringer” sheet as they enter class.
    • Option: Have students discuss the question with a partner or in a small group.
  • Vocabulary Review: Have students work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to complete the Lesson 14.4 Vocabulary Review Worksheet.
  • Quiz: Have students complete the Lesson 14.4 Quiz to assess their prior knowledge.
    • Option: Collect the quiz and use it alongside a posttest to demonstrate student learning.
    • Option: Have students share their answers with a partner and then go over the answers together as a class.

Lesson Content

Review the content from the textbook lesson.

Lesson Focus: Healthy Communication

  1. Provide one copy of the Lesson 14.4 Skill-Building Challenge Worksheet: Healthy Communication for each student.
  2. Have students practice what they would say for each emergency situation when calling 9-1-1.
  3. Have students pair up and complete the rest of the questions.
  4. Students could also share with the class or in small groups their answers to the questions.

Challenge Activity

Have students needing an additional challenge work on the following Thinking Critically task.

Choose a medical emergency discussed in the lesson and explain the steps, in the proper order, you would take to help the victim.

Reflection and Summary

Review the critical content from today’s lesson. Review the learning targets and ask students to answer each question posed.

Can you...

  • Practice each of the emergency action steps?

Check the scene and the victim.

    Call 9-1-1.

    Care for the victim.

  • Explain why you should use universal precautions?

Universal precautions are taken to reduce the risk of transmitting pathogens. You want to protect you and your patient from blood-borne illnesses and other infectious diseases.

  • Describe the steps to giving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)?

Perform 30 chest compressions and then two rescue breaths. Chest compressions squeeze the heart, which moves blood to the brain and other vital organs. Rescue breaths deliver oxygen to the lungs.

  • Identify the common signs of a sudden illness?

Common symptoms of a sudden illness include trouble breathing, dizziness, chest pain, changes in levels of consciousness, blurred vision, and numbness or weakness.

  • Distinguish the differences between closed and open wounds?

Closed wounds consist of bruises and internal bleeding, and open wounds involve the skin being torn apart to some degree and typically involves some bleeding.

  • Describe two memory and thinking issues of a person with a concussion?
    • Difficulty remembering new information
    • Difficulty thinking clearly
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Difficulty remembering events that occurred just before and just after the incident

Assessment

Complete one or more of the following assessment tasks for this lesson.

Take It Home

Check your first aid kit or whatever medical supplies you have at home to see if you have dressings and bandages you could use if someone cut themselves and had severe bleeding. Make a list of items you need to create or improve your first aid kit.
